Laying waste to the yellow jersey myths

By veloclinic · On March 4, 2013

Ferrari/Armstrong Rebuttal, Part 3

“Armstrong could have beat the dopers”

no fuggin way

altitude could have been as effective as his doping

no fuggin way

no fuggin way

no fuggin way

armstrong could have won clean if everyone else was clean

still no fuggin way

hell he wouldn’t even beat vande velde clean

“armstrongs VO2 max was a remarkable 85 ml/kg/min”

Laboratory measures of the subject in our study were not made soon after the Tour de France; however, with the conservative assumption that V̇O2 max was at least 6.1 l/min and given his reported body weight of 72 kg, we estimate his V̇O2 max to have been at least 85 ml·kg−1·min−1 during the period of his victories in the Tour de France. ~ Edward F. Coyle

the 85 ml/kg/min Armstrong VO2 max myth

courtesy of Coyle

only if yer a psuedoscience fan boy

(his best measured was an 81 ml/kg/min at the olympic training center)

“armstrong transformed because of weight loss”

the 85 ml/kg/min Armstrong VO2 max myth

courtesy of Coyle

go ahead

read it

one of the best science mockumentaries

to date

lets start with coyle’s math skills

best measured VO2 6.1 L/min

best measured weight

76 kg

so

6.1 / 76 x 1000 = (in coyle math)

81 ml/kg/min

(in real math)

80.2 ml/kg/min

so from coyle’s own data

he never measure armstrong

at 81 ml/kg/min

so how the shit does

he come up with the 85 ml/kg/min

?

he takes at face value

armstrong’s reported race wieght of 72-74 kg

(that’s right coyle never measured his weight anyfugginwhere near 72)

cherry pick’s the 72 kg

and

6.1 / 72 x 1000 = viola! (in coyle math) 85 ml/kg/min

(in real math)

84.7 ml/kg/min

completely ignoring his own data

where he measured armstrong’s lean mass at

70 kg

which would put him

at

2.9 % body fat

in a pre AICAR TDF world

for perspective

remember the freakishly thin 2009 wiggins?

4% body fat

to be nice to coyle

and his brand uv batshit crazy

fan boy science

lets split the difference between

his not real 81

and his

even less real 85

n

call armstrong

83 ml/kg/min VO2 max

for blood dope simulator purposes.

no fuggin way

unless yer the same pseudoscience fanboy

that never bothered to weigh him

or even check if the shit he spoon fed you made any damn sense

“armstrong transformed because of increased efficiency”

no fuggin way

jeeziss effin hell how many fuggin myths did coyle generate

with one fuggin paper

unreal

armstrong key to victory

his “ability to recover”

his “cadence”

his “cancer”

yuh mean

doped harder

blood bags on top of EPO

cuz he simply had that kind uv room to dope

ferrari is still really smart

nah not even this one holds tecate

tiny cyclismas character

the data

armstrong

clean

was at best

uh

VO2 max 83 ml/kg/min

73 kg

5.7 w/kg

grand tour non-contender

if yer feelin generous

and ignore the fact that

coyle never even measure him above 81 ml/kg/min

or

less than 76 kg

n

ignore that fact

that he in all likelyhood

mightuv shown up doped fer the fuggin testing

tuh begin with

listen

the crazy is got to end

epo doping

but just a little

turns out works just as well

as epo doping

a lot

his recovery

was not recovery

but blood bags

which work quick enough

tuh take advantage of GT volume expansion

n make all the fuggin difference

in the second half uv the grand tour

like EPO post 50% rule

never fuggin could

tiny cyclismas character

ferrari

brilliant dope doc

?

fer what

lifting a microdose regimen straight outta uh paper

hell

even yer half competent med students

do this all the fuggin time

tiny cyclismas character

If the myths are such utter bullshit

why

why

the shit go ranting on about

armstrong

n

ferrari

like uh rabid fuggin squirrel inna ice wrink

why

?

cuz

there’s quite the fuggin obvious

lesson

here

still not the fugg bein learned

that

implausible performance

is probably just fuggin that

implausible

n

not

the magical powers uv tenerife

the revolutionary insights uv uh swimming coach

not cadance

not better treatment uv saddle sores

not sum scientific fan boy slight uv hand

going on in the fuggin forumns

trying the shit to justify

the magical transformations still the fugg

goin on

right on the champs de Elysee

veloclinic

veloclinic is the reincarnation of one of our favorite Twitter friends, @captaintbag1, whose tumblr blog posts were a kind of blank verse, Tecate-soaked haiku of truthiness that cut through the slick bullshit and to the very core of what is gloriously fucked up about the sport of cycling. Although the Cap may be gone (sort of), his Doctor tbag/Captain Hyde alter ego lives on, and we’re glad to share his pithy analysis here. Lest you think these are the idiot ramblings of a madman, we’d like you to know that the doc is a legitimate professional in the science of sports medicine, and a savant when it comes to doping analysis. You have been warned. Nowadays Doc is much in demand as a legitimate authority-type commentator on the science of cycling performances, and his work has been featured in VeloNews, Outside online, and prominent sports medicine publications and symposia. His tumblr, in its current incarnation, may not be safe for cycling fans. Follow @veloclinic on Twitter
