RyderVonHarder thanks for the compliment, thats the first time I have ever mead it to the heady heights of 'journalist', a status I dont' really deserve. Just a grumpy middle aged man on a bike who would rather group rides are sociable. Although it's a little tongue in cheek, my team mates were totally serious about getting me to sign up, when they started 'racing' mid 'ride'.... I just couldn't bring myself to do it.
If you use it and love it, that's great.. the main thing is keep riding and enjoying it!

I have been using strava for a month and I like the motivation that riding timed segments can give me. I also realize that
I can put too much emphasis on putting up numbers and road miles instead of jumping on my mountain bike, or cross bike and riding for the pleasure and scenery. Last weekend I had my absolute worst climb in years, it was hot humid , i had no power turned around at the summit instead of finishing my ride. i got home and saw that I was 490th of five hundred on the climb. To my surprise I saw the name of a co worker who is 2 inches shorter and 30 pounds heavier than me. I was only a few minutes ahead of him on the seven mile climb. I found it humorous, demoralizing and motivating. Since i haven't got the willpower to starve myself. I will be switching the compact crank for that good old triple with the 32 tooth cassette. I will continue to use strava but I will not let it steal my soul and make me run every stop sign for a PR or beat the pavement to death for a monthly mileage challenge.

Interesting when people write tongue-in-cheek derogatory "letters" to products that they don't care to use. Whatever. You don't like it. Don't use it. I get that you're a "journalist" and need to generate content, but find something real to write about. Some people like the way Strava works, some don't. Close your account, get over it, and move on.

You've convinced me. I'll still upload to Strava, but I'll do it all in "Private" mode. I can do that can't I?

Great of you to write this.....I've been thinking along the same lines......especially when I see people "following " me on Strava....um, that's not following, its stalking,in the truest sense. We work so hard and consume so much time in other aspects of our lives, the ride should be left as a ride, and enjoyable escape from the mundane. If you really want to best me, or try....see you at the races.
